Creating Free Wildlife Habitats With Native Plants
In this video, we explore cost-effective and environmentally friendly approaches to creating wildlife habitats on your property. With over 30 years in the farm equipment business, I've seen firsthand how landowners often overspend on habitat establishment when a simpler method could yield better results: utilizing existing native plants.
Why Use Native Plants?
Many landowners embark on costly processes of bush hogging, spraying, plowing, and seeding to establish wildlife habitats. However, the solution might already be in the plants growing on your land. Native plants are adapted to the local environment, require less maintenance, and provide essential resources for pollinators and wildlife...

Yes, think about this, You spray the plants then turn the soil over. You have just taken the moisture out of the soil and killed all the microbes in the soil. It is now dead. The better way in my opinion if you slash to 6'' approx this keeps the soil covered and stops it drying out and the soil is still alive. You can then direct disc seed with minimum soil disturbance. Give it a go, you will be building better soil for doing it.

I enjoyed your video. A very common sense approach. As a sustainable Horticulturist. I applaud your work. I would suggest that folks wanting to reestablish native flora, think about making seed bombs. ( a mixture of native seeds. Put into a golf ball size mud ball it needs tobe hard enough when dry that it will not crumble. and when mowing or driving around randomly throw them in late fall early winter. A pound of mixed seeds formulated for your area. Is relatively inexpensive.

wish I could. My problem is I have about 7 acres of woods of my 11 acres. And the woods is dying from the ash borer. And the other main filler are white birch which get root rot from the moist soil. And the main ground plants are thorn bushes. And they grow at an alarming rate.

Thanks for the good advice Mike. Your place looks real nice. I do the “drunk mowing” approach to get the autumn olive and wild parsnip on our land. It looks weird but keeps the mowing to only bad stuff. Another thing people might want to consider is enrolling in CRP if the land is eligible and you don’t mind a little bit of oversight. It is a good program and at least in our area there are enrollment options specifically for plans to help pollinators. I can’t wait to try the app you suggested.

Here in Southern Oregon we have purple vetch which is prolific and the deer love it. It is high in protein and beautiful but the deer don’t eat it until it starts to dry out about the time they start dropping their babies. Luckily it grows on the steeper slopes which is just fine with me. I wish there was a way to send a photo because it is just a 2’ high carpet of purple. I’m sure the bees and hummingbirds love it too.

Great subject matter Mike. In Colorado the AG extension will send out, free of charge, an agronomist and botanist to take soil samples, determine plant health and show you what are invasive species. they will also work up a plan for you to take whats there, and add what is needed, and remove what is bad. e.g. I own several hundred acres spread out across a 220000 acre ranch, not all of which is farmland. some here is just "residences" on 30 to 80 acre parcels. I dedicated a 71acre plot to wildlife and conservation. my cost to implement the plan they gave me, $0.00 it was all provided and I didnt know it until seed and inputs started showing up.

We maintenance about 4 miles trails combined between them. 90%+ of both is left to nature, other than clearing invasives every few years. We have everything from box turtles to bears. The funny thing is that my parents maintain their yard, that contains an acre of old apple orchard, like a golf course, but have more ticks than I do and I use no chemicals vs their monthly spraying.

I have been practicing this on my farm for more than ten years now. As to mowing, I mow once, or twice at the most per YEAR, and this is at the end of July, or first of August. I used to be "one of those guys" that would spend LOTS of TIME and MONEY, that would mow my pastures and food plots, making things look like a golf course. Then I heard about "RMS" a.k.a. Recreational Mowing Syndrome. Google it and it may change your mind as it did mine. Not only does it save time and money to minimize your mowing, but it saves a LOT OF WEAR AND TEAR on your equipment too! My "rough looking pastures" now provide more food for wildlife than did my "groomed food plots".

We have 4 acres of our land set aside for wildlife in one section and just under an acre in another. We have all kinds of wildlife in there. Never mow or spray. Don't even cut trees in there. Full of every kind of hunting wildlife in NE Kansas there is, plus all kinds of birds, insects, reptiles and all. Not only is it good for the habitat, land and air quality, but you also get a tax break, at least in Kansas.

I want to thank you for this video. We started doing this on our acreage about 11 years ago. Now we have wonderful variety of flowers and plants. We have collected some seeds from nearby wild areas to supplement what was here. We have put in trails also. It is a family favorite for walking and the dog loves it too. I understand the concern about fire that one of your posters mentioned. Being in a drier area then you that is always a worry but we keep a defensible border around the buildings. We do our ground management a little bit different also. First we split the ground into 3rds. Then each third goes thru a rotation of burning in the first year, the next year that area is bush hogged and the 3rd year left alone. The burning and bush hogging help to reduce the risk of fire and go a long way to maintaining our prairie. We do leave ours standing in the winter to provide cover for the critters and it helps in adding moisture to the ground from frost and dew. We call our property a Butterfly ranch due too the large number that hang out here. (Open range of course!) Thanks for this video! 😄

Excellent video. When I first talked to our local state wildlife biologist and told him that we'd like to manage the land for wildlife, he asked what wildlife we already had. He then said to keep it looking just like it is at the moment and to take out any hard stemmed woody stuff or invasive species that happen to come up. He also suggested the use of prescribed fire to maintain an early successional habitat. (Growing season vs dormant season depending on what you're shooting for.) I asked about putting out wildlife plots and he told me that we already have that so why spend money to destroy it and then more money to replant it. Makes sense and saves money. Also, the random meandering trails you cut are perfect for what the wildlife wants and make excellent hunting hikes for taking upland game with the grandkids.

Being a newby in farm land management, I was tempted to make 7 acres adjacent to the farm buildings 'park-like'. But after seeing deer being comfortable close around the house in light woods and ground cover, we will take your advice. I'll use the app you suggested to identify plants to control. My first yard slope mowing on the zero turn, showed me the discomfort felt on side slopes. We'll leave those areas natural. Glad I didn't have that lesson on the Ferguson T0-30 with rotary cutter. It ran over his leg a was stung over 1000 times, couldn’t move and wasn’t found until his wife came home and made dinner a couldn’t find him. He never got over this and lost a large body shop for trucks. Only good thing where the body shop was ended up being very desirable property and sold for a shopping center years later.

Nice! We do similar things to this. However, we like to get an inventory of anything we don’t want to accidentally destroy. We are building an orchard from the various desirable plants we have found sprouting in the fields: pears, peaches, apples, persimmons, elderberry, oak, ash, and so on. Once we either mark or transplant them, THEN we do selective bush hogging.

A part of the problem with a decline in sales, for many industries, is the aging baby boomers. Same goes for inheritance of money.

It would be nice to know what repair work will be needed as part of the normal use of a tractor and whether you could do the work yourself. Plus, what would the repair entail.
